Jesse Woodman

”Working with Ettie was a pleasure. Her curiosity and collaborative approach gave me confidence that we’d selected the right guest speaker for our event. Ettie’s session on the Joy of Inclusive Conversations was a fantastic entry point into inclusive language. Practical, poignant, and motivational describe the session well. Attendees couldn't stop talking about how thought-provoking yet simple Ettie’s advice was. Her session took the fear out of trying to be more inclusive and has sparked meaningful conversation.

I highly recommend working with Ettie if you want to challenge the misconception that inclusive language is intimidating or complicated.”

Jesse Woodman, Learning Design Manager

Luke Jackson

“The Southbank Centre’s first experience of Ettie was onscreen, in her video boxset on inclusive communication hosted on the learning platform Inrehearsal. We shared the content through a number of internal channels, and as our familiarity with it grew we realised we were fast becoming fans of Ettie’s grounded and practical approach to discussing inclusion, and the energy and warmth in her facilitation style.

In parallel, we had offered our colleagues earlier L&D opportunities on neurodivergence that felt comparatively prescriptive and low energy. We knew that we needed to collaborate with someone who respected that neurodivergence that doesn’t conform to easy definitions, and could create a space for discussions in which everyone felt comfortable engaging. For us, that was Ettie.

Ettie has hosted four in person events at the Southbank, two on the subject of Inclusive Communication, and two on neuro-inclusion, that have been described as ‘hugely important and helpful’ and Ettie as ‘engaging and knowledgeable’. One participant surmised the feeling in the room well ‘...feel like I know myself more and can help other colleagues wahoo!’

As L&D Manager I have found Ettie’s working style to be open, collaborative, and a genuine pleasure. She always makes sure that the end result reflects our early scoping conversations, and she has the knack of making her sessions feel like one off, special events. It has been a joy to convert many of our staff into fellow fans.”

Christy White

"Ettie is a wonder to work with - her delivery style, pacing and content were all absolute 10/10. What makes it even more impressive is that Ettie engages with the audience chat and questions whilst keeping the flow of the session moving, uninterrupted. Can't wait to continue partnering, thank you Ettie for sharing your wonderful work!"

Nick Basannavar

”Ettie ran a session with the whole Included team. She prepared meticulously, consulting us on what kinds of topics we would like to see covered and what kinds of contexts we operated in. As a result of this, the session felt very tailored to us and immediately applicable. Ettie certainly knew her audience and pitched the session perfectly.

Her facilitation style was inclusive, engaging and compelling. She brought the team with her and left us energised and eager to apply what we had learned.

We would certainly like to partner with Ettie again in the future and would recommend any organisation thinking about inclusive communications to get in touch with her!”

A workshop client

”I’ve had so many people stop me in the hall and message me about how amazing you were. Everyone found it so insightful and useful. On a personal note, I’m equally thankful for how curious and collaborative you’ve been with us as you prepped for this session.”

Mbeke Waseme

”Your style and energy were contagious. Your content was engaging. Your openness was fabulous.”

Jemma Bicknell

”Ettie is an excellent trainer, who makes light work of tackling complex subjects – in fact, she makes it a thoroughly enjoyable experience!

At the training session she skillfully managed to strike the perfect balance between challenging us and holding a safe space. She used brilliant interactive exercises which then prompted rich discussions; during which she managed to ensure everyone was involved without it ever feeling forced.

This was a day-long training session and it felt like just a few hours because it was so engaging and inspiring. I think everyone should take this training - it's essential for the voluntary sector but also the wider community.”

Rhys, Starling Bank

“I lead a team of colleagues who are specialised in vulnerable customers and we’ve had lots of workshops on how to improve our writing styles, but your session, passion and personality really clicked with them. You really helped them understand the why, and gave some great real examples to bring it to life.”

Helen Lawson

“Ettie gave a talk to the Co-op content design community of practice and she was incredible. A great speaker with a well thought through presentation. She also has great examples up her sleeve and answers questions in such a clear way. This was one of our highest attended sessions and created a lively discussion afterwards. I've had several messages from people asking me to get Ettie back again.

I would recommend her to any organisation that wants to learn more about inclusive language”

Jodie Hoskin

“I can’t recommend The Bold Type with Ettie Bailey-King enough! Ettie is an exceptional trainer, and frankly a fountain of knowledge when it comes to inclusive language.

I feel so lucky to have come across this course as part of my work with Media Trust. I’m just over half way through the course myself, and I already know that I am a better communications professional because of it.

Comms friends, sign up to The Bold Type’s next cohort today!”

A post from Michelle Keller, content design leader reads: "This course has been fantastic. Real, practical principles that are immediately applicable. I highly recommend it!"

“Bold Type is a truly brilliant course, that covers all the principles of inclusive and accessible comms and helps you put them into practice. It has been thought-provoking, uplifting and very impactful for our organisation. Highly recommend!"

Communications officer, UK charity

"This course really is thought-provoking and provides you with so much to think about and so many things that you can implement that is really going to live much longer than the course. So in terms of value you're going to get out of it, I think it's incredibly rich"

DEI officer, RIBA

"Since I finished the course, I’ve been much more aware of non-inclusive language and finding alternatives.

For example, rather than saying ‘blind spot’, I use ‘lack of awareness’ or ‘knowledge gap’. I’ve started using text-to-speech to listen to my drafts. This tech helps me catch and fix clunky sentences. And I remind myself to use specific terms instead of generic umbrella terms, or euphemisms, wherever possible."

Dawn Kofie, Content designer

"The training is well organised with a clear schedule of topics, and is supported by additional resources in a learning portal as well as the possibility to catch-up on anything you’ve missed (including recordings of all the sessions)."

"This course has been fantastic. Real, practical principles that are immediately applicable. I highly recommend it!!"

Michelle, Content designer

"I had noticed she was a multi award winning inclusive communicator and her posts and words rose to the surface of Linkedin like some rare sighting of a dolphin leaping from the ocean in playful delight!

In a world where words are increasingly weaponised, there was Ettie boldly taking language to task - with a creative and playful twist that illuminated a beautiful respect for inclusion and accessibility. I knew I could definitely learn a lot from her - so I signed up.”

Debbie, Co-director and EDI Board Advisor

"I find myself awed by the value of the knowledge that's been shared. I joined the class to learn about accessibility best practices in writing, but I didn't think it would go as far as questioning the literal definition of "disability".

The very language we use, the way how it shapes our world. Even something as simple as asking, "What is the cost of ambiguity in writing?" It's such a basic question, but hearing it phrased so simply, really made me think about my approach to writing and communication as a whole."

Jeanette, Senior Copywriter

"[My highlight was] definitely the sessions focused on disability, particularly the Disability Action Week, were the most impactful for me and the work I do.

As a person working for a disability charity, I found the content provided really insightful and eye-opening (despite having done courses on accessibility before).

I also really loved the Disability Justice Masterclass with Sulaiman - it was great to hear his perspective and find out more about the principles of Disability Justice. The masterclass was a great mix of information and humour, and I found it really engaging."

Dominika, Fundraising and Communications Officer at Caxton Youth
